Where it All Began
In 1920, Stanley S. Downes opened a small accounting practice on Pitt Street, Sydney. Built on integrity, professionalism and care, Stanley believed success was never just about numbers, it was about helping people, families, and businesses shape their futures with confidence and care.
Clients partnered with the firm across generations. Partners and staff paused their careers to serve in the military, enduring the Great Depression, WWII, and the changing tides of Australia’s economy. With resilience and duty at its core, the firm’s move to Martin Place in 1939, cemented its legacy in Sydney’s financial community.
A New Chapter in Brisbane
In 1984, Paramjit “Peter” Sarai founded Sarai Financial Services in Brisbane, bringing with him resilience, vision and a belief that “achieving more is possible.” From modest beginnings, Peter’s passion for education and transparency transformed how financial advice was delivered. His leadership inspired industry change, setting new standards for integrity and innovation.
Innovation Meets Heritage
By the late 1990s, both Sydney and Brisbane firms were thriving — innovating, growing and expanding. In 2008, their shared values united under a single name: Modoras — the Moderators of Financial Futures.
This integration of accounting, wealth and advisory services created a truly holistic, client-first approach — where advice, strategy and care work together for lasting success.
A Victorian Chapter Begins
In 2010, Modoras welcomed two respected Victorian firms into the family. Each brought decades of expertise, deep client relationships, and a shared commitment to care and excellence.
Their integration wasn’t about expanding geography; it was about uniting values and one shared vision – delivering holistic professional advice with care and integrity.
Today and Tomorrow
From a one-room office to more than 450 professionals across 26 locations, including our partner firms in the UK, India and the Philippines, Modoras has grown into a powerhouse of collaboration, innovation and possibility. Yet, our purpose remains unchanged — to empower people, families and businesses to achieve their ambitions with clarity and confidence.
